Is this something that will benefit the nonprofit sector?

As a recognized and respected thought leader in the nonprofit industry, I would truly appreciate your insights as to whether this platform could be a useful tool that would help support the nonprofit community.

Respectfully,

Summary

Workforce shortages and limited budgets are frequently the norm in the nonprofit industry. However, the 2025 cuts to federal grant funding and the increasing number of layoffs have only exacerbated these issues. The nonprofit sector and those in leadership are going to have to be as innovative and flexible as possible during this time in order to remain impactful.

After 12 years working as a full-time nonprofit employee, I entered the contracting/freelance market in 2024. Based on this experience, and watching the events of 2025 unfold, I believe that the nonprofit sector as a whole needs to be better utilizing the freelance market available to them.

Those who still have full-time nonprofit jobs are burnt out, and being asked to continue to do more with less. However, there is a growing number of experienced nonprofit professionals who need to replace their full-time income, or who are looking for a new opportunity that will allow them to escape the burnout.

NonprofitGig.org was created to better utilize the growing working model of freelance work, and apply it to the nonprofit sector. Utilizing contractors can be an extremely effective use of time and money for nonprofit organizations.

The basis of this job board is to encourage nonprofit organization to post ANY job or “gig” with ANY budget. Working to help alleviate the burden on staff, utilize the immense knowledge and skill available in the freelance market, and spend available funding in an efficient and cost effective manner.

Working more quickly and nimbly with the freelance market can increase a nonprofit’s productivity, especially when finances limit the ability to recruit and retain full-time staff. Additionally, there are experienced nonprofit professionals looking for work and for ways to continue to contribute to the sector.

Statistics

  • More than one in four (28%) U.S. knowledge workers are now freelancing or working independently, generating a collective $1.5 trillion in earnings in 2024. (Upwork Research Institute)

  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy published a monthly estimate of nonprofit job losses by sector. In 2025, from January through March, they estimated more the 10,000 layoffs in the nonprofit sector.

  • 88% of nonprofits have annual budgets of less than $500,000. (National Council of Nonprofits).

  • Almost three out of four nonprofits (72.2%) said salary competition affects their ability to recruit and retain employees, followed by budget constraints/insufficient funds (66.3%).  (National Council of Nonprofits

What makes NonprofitGig.org different?

  • Nonprofit can create a post for any project or position, with any budget, and any arrangement.

If the organization only has a $150 budget for a graphic design project for example, it didn't make sense for them to use a job board. Now there is no-cost to putting out the request for support.

Nonprofits and work seekers can filter by arrangement type, focus area, and location.

  • Nonprofit can post jobs or gigs for free. I wanted to create a no-barrier option for nonprofits to connect with nonprofit professionals looking for work.

This is a different model than other job boards that charge the organization a fee to post. NonprofitGig.org will be a monthly subscription to the "gig seeker", with the idea being that the “seeker” will be able to recuperate their money with just one sucessful work opportunity.
